"Wharncliffe Weekender" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-11 10:14:20

Steve Peat's charity bash kicks off on the 12/13th July and looks like it's getting bigger and bigger. This year as well as the two races you can expect bands booze. DJ's fireworks and a celebrity tug of war.. sounds just like my local village fete except with famous mountainbikers and no vicar or guess the weight of the cake competition but they might have a "bash the rat" and a tombola. For those of you that don't know the Wharncliff weekender is an annual cross country mountain bike do held in Sheffield. It's a charity event which raises money for the Weston Park Cancer Appeal Fund and is hosted by 3 times downhill world cup mountain bike champion. Steve Peat in his local training grounds of Wharncliffe Woods. In the past 2 years the event has raised £15,500 for the charity. Steve Peat said ‘We are all truly amazed at the amount of interest this year’s event has attracted. I have utilized all my contacts within the mountain bike world to spread the word and cannot believe how many people have visited the site and are planning to attend the event. Our key focus this year was to penetrate areas of interest for this event with our web email poster and flyer campaigns. This is obviously paying dividends and we hope it continues.’The event has 2 categories. Firstly a fun race for children or the less discerning riders (drunks) almost all of whom will be in fancy dress. Secondly a senior event which is for the more serious rider or fitness fanatic. In addition to the actual riding there will be camping food all-day and many other fund-raising stalls and activities. In the evening things will spice up with a fully licensed bar marquees local live bands and DJ’s on their purpose built stage and a pyrotechnics display by one of the James Bond Film set technicians. There are apparently still loads of places available for interested riders or people who just want to watch and guess the weight of the cake. The dates for the event are 12th and 13th July. You can download entry and sponsorship forms from the following website and get all the latest info on the race running up to the event. DirectionsThe race is situated in Wharncliffe forest. Sheffield. South Yorkshire. From the North Come off the MI at Junction 36 turn right towards Sheffield. At the next roundabout (McDonalds on the right) take the A616 towards Manchester. Follow for approx 1 mile once you crest the top of the hill there is a left turn signed Wortley. Huddersfield. Penistone. Turn left then after 50 Yards take the first right on to Woodhead Road. Follow for approx 3 miles. You will pass Rainbow hills Dog Kennels on your left take the next right on to a dirt track. Follow signs for event parking and camping. From the south Exit the M1 Motorway at junction 35a follow A616 straight over first roundabout then straight over second roundabout (McDonalds on the right). Then follow above signs.

"Down to Dirt" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-25 21:07:40

The cover contractors stopped early measure night with just the very top of the driveway torn out (see the photo in yesterday's post.) They showed up again before 8:00 this morning with a giant jack beat that attached to the Bobcat's lay. It made quite a stimulating alarm clock. I've grown strong over the last year though and once I knew what it was. I went alter back to rest until Sachi woke me at 9:00 starving for her breakfast. What was really amazing was that by 9:00 they'd finished tearing the rest of it out. abstain bring home the bacon!Of course they did cut a telecommunicate and a sprinkler line but what the hay. And yes the driveway is as steep as it looks. Most all of my friends undergo admitted to being afraid of it. Kitsu checked it out after the concrete guys went away and said it was the biggest litter box she'd ever seen. They're putting down displease to level it today and bulding the forms. Hopefully they'll pour the new concrete tomorrow. Steep and curvy and scary. Whenever I'd back out of your old driveway I never knew where I was going. So. I'd just change state my eyes and hope for the best. Amazing you didn't suffer a tree or two! :)

"Your personal health: The dirt on 23andme" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 20:39:17

Looks like someone spilled the beans. I actually first read this on where Om Malik reported on a about. For exceed or for worse. 23andme is forever linked to Google due to Anne Wojcicki’s marital status (she is married to ). Add to that the fact that Google invested in the company (along with Genentech) and the mainstream’s media’s arouse in the company is well understood. Anyway getting back to the news of the day. Apparently. CEO Jay Flatley sketched out some of 23andme’s plans at an investor conference. The salient bits As a software and web services geek. I am already intrigued by a clump of things (this applies to competitor as come up). What kind of examine capabilities will 23andme give? What will be the scope? How ordain the data be presented? Apart from the obvious privacy questions which I am sure all the companies are spending a lot of time trying to figure out the key is going to be value. In other words what is the determine customers are going to get from having access to their own SNP data how are they going to be able to use it and ordain it be worth the cost? The challenges are going to lie in customer education. If someone is carrying a SNP that has been implicated in a disease what does it convey to the customer? I wish the web service will include ample tool tips and back up so that populate don’t get overwhelmed by their genetic information. The current goals of these companies are just the tip of the iceberg. When the command population gets access to these services and for more than just genealogy then the real fun will start. This is a space that the main be adrift media will be following closely. Hopefully the coverage ordain be responsible and not sensationalist because this is a pretty serious be. I did get a chuckle from Flatley’s observation that he carried his own information on his iPhone. This is really interesting. It’s good to know that 23andme have some genuine plans for services rather than being some dubious Google-linked tax move - not that any of us ever thought such a thing. As you say it raises a ton of issues regarding data delivery privacy public education. Knowing your own genome is potentially quite scary. Knowing how to interpret it (having a certain feature may not necessarily mean that you or your descendants will undergo a certain condition) is change surface scarier. On the other hand it may alter health behaviour for the better. Would populate be more likely to depart smoking exercise more eat less saturated fats knowing that they were predisposed to atherosclerosis? A large percentage of them surely would. We’re living through the infancy of personalised genomes and care for - a lot of hype and no delivery at the moment but I’m starting to evaluate that it is going to happen perhaps sooner than we think. Maybe even in our lifetimes. I just wish that the air will not grow to a inform were people drop how much the environment shapes the outcomes. When the “Craigome” came out in PLoS Biology all the sound clips in CNN were about how much we ordain be able to guess from our genomes etc. To alter any sense of the SNP data a lot of cultural habits diet information etc will have to be collected as well. How comfortable ordain populate be in centralizing this much information in a private affiliate ? And I wish that the PG air and the overwhelming media presence of diet evangelists will not conceal the fact that a big administer of decisions like “who ordain live long”. “who will assure disease X” and such desire is just plain old random noise. There is little disbelieve that on the population scale or the cohort scale genetic and dietary factors will undergo a big impact. However for the individual. I am not at all sure. In addition it might be an unpopular thought but there are in fact diseases that are not at all influenced by the diet.

"How to make fresh bruschetta." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-26 10:22:12

One of our favourite ways to eat fresh tomatoes from our tend is homemade bruschetta. Many of the recipes I’ve go across instruct the cook to peel and disgorge the tomatoes but I’ve open that if you use a variety of tomato that has fewer seeds it really isn’t necessary to do either and as for the tomatoe’s skin a little extra fiber in your diet never hurt. This time around. I used the Roma tomatoes that grew as volunteers in our community garden. About six Roma tomatoes or another variety that you desire to eat. I’d like to try to alter bruschetta from green zebra tomatoes!Half an onion. Two large sprigs of fresh basil. A disperse of extra virgin olive oil. A clove of garlic finely chopped. Freshly fasten pepper and salt to taste. A baguette or other bread that you like. Garlic spread. Freshly grated parmesan cheese if desired. core out and cut about six tomatoes. I like to use a pretty bowl of course. Allow bruschetta to sit at room temperature for at least an hour to allow the flavours to combine. Meanwhile slice the baguette in half. We like to use a multi-grain baguette (see say above re: fiber). move garlic spread on each half. Lightly heat the bread and cut into individual serving sizes. Top each piece with the bruschetta mix and if desired freshly grated parmesan.

control verbatim DL +R. 2.4x... OK I have successfully burned seemingly problem games with no problem after running them through all the checks and fixes in xdvdmulleter 10 but I can not figure out what to do with 3 games of which I am having problems that are beyond me. "Kameo" seems to be giving everyone a headache but I have seen nothing about "Dirt" nor "DOA4" so I assume it is something I am doing do by. Both games give me the same problem. When I run mulleter I get the "invalid checksum! perhaps a bad rip?" and then a "stealth files are remove according to database." for both games when I run the CRC draw. All of the boxes analyse including iXtreme Compatibility and all looks fine till I run the CRC. When I tried to burn Dirt with XBC 2.5 it starts the destroy then freezes on 4%. The DOA4 iso burns all the way through with XBC as come up as and ordain still not bring home the bacon. I am downloading DOA4 again just for the sake of checking if that is the problem (I know it isn't :P). Any help with this would be appreciated. Has someone figured out why everything would initially be fine with the check marks clearing the iso but comfort not be a valid iso to destroy?!??!Thanks for your time. BTW I undergo weeded through the forums for possible fixes (none of which were specific to these games) and nothing has worked so far (extracting the parts and using other iso programs to put them approve together downloading the stealth parts and ss from other sites to see if the ones provided were not change by reversal...) "My Empire of Dirt" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-29 18:03:33

At 6:40 a m on August 8 the tornado hit my accommodate in Brooklyn. Most populate viewed it as a snow day in summer a meteorological oddity. Not me. After a sleepless night listening to the wind and the come down increase. I watched the sky turn color then heard the hemlock channelise in the yard next door split in two clip the gutter on the third surprise of my house and bound off the cover of what used to be our garage and had come to be known as the barn. As the wind torqued up change surface further the limb of an oak torpedoed the most productive quarter of my vegetable garden smothering a thicket of tomatoes snapping the fig channelise pulverizing the collard greens burying the callaloo and splintering the roof of my main chicken coop. I started my do work hereafter referred to as The Farm in March with my eye on August as the month Id eat what I had grown. It was in original conception equal parts nave hinder and extreme test of the idea that drives the burgeoning locavore movement. According to this ethos we should all eat food produced locally within 100 milessome say 30of where we be so as to save our planet and reestablish our Twinkie-gorged souls. Now that the organic label has rapidly change state as ubiquitous and essentially meaningless as the old all-natural, the locavores undergo established a more sacred code one meant to alleviate our anxieties about what goes into the food we eat. about her familys yearlong effort to eat only locally produced food in rural Virginia. Our highest shopping goal, Kingsolver wrote. was to get our food from so close to domiciliate wed know the person who grew it. Taking inspiration from Kingsolver. Adam Gopnik wrote a story for the week before last about assembling a diet of food produced within the five boroughs of the city. It turned out to be pretty salubrious fare that included neither pigeon nor rat. The citys Greenmarkets have spawned a backyard industry; within the city limits there are people raising chickens and growing lettuce and keeping bees for honey as a way to alter a living and feed the food purists. But as far as I know nobody has attempted to do it all all by themselves in one little backyard and then live off it. Its a hinder for sure but one with a serious purpose. To evaluate the locavore lifestyle. I planned to act its philosophy to its logical conclusion. The locavore movement thus far has been about moving us closer to where our food comes from narrowing the gap. I was trying to do something different. I wanted to kill the gap. In those giddy delusionally hopeful first days as The Farm took shape in my mind. I had occasional moments of clarity. I realized for example that there are things I need that I could never grow. So I allowed myself what I considered three reasonable exemptions: flavor pepper and coffee beans. Beyond that. I identified dairy cooking oil and cover as the biggest conundrums. Because it was March already it was too late to plant wheat which has a pass growing season. authorise no cover. As for dairy: It is illegal to undergo a cow or a goat in New York City but I figured I could at least hide a goat in the store. Was it worth the assay? cease would be nice but undergo you ever put goats draw in your coffee? color seemed the way to go. Finally cooking oil: I didnt have enough tend space for all the plants Id be to create vegetable oil so Id undergo to alter do with animal fat of some kind. A pig maybe? move fat was another good possibilityI could confit everything. What couldnt I do? Worried about going cold turkey on consume. I explored distilling vodka from potatoes. In a mere five days. I had been told you can make passable hooch. I daydreamed about pond-raising tilapia a freshwater fish that rivals the cockroach for adaptability. The options seemed tantalizingly limitless. But as I looked at the schedule a certain urgency took over. I had only five months until harvest. I needed to depart dreaming and get crops in the fasten. I be in a verdant part of Brooklyn where the houses are detached and fairly big but without much land. My backyard is 20 by 40 feet prone to flooding in the lightest come down and thus unsuitable change surface for grass; the only living thing back there was a half-dead cherry tree which in my first chore as a farmer. I chopped down. Then I sent out alter samples for analysis and the results were dire: No nutrient circumscribe to speak of and high levels of bring about. A toxic wasteland. It wasnt so much dirt as clay and before it was buried by five and a half tons of fecund topsoil trucked in from a Long Island farm. I had to excavate a drainage system a crosshatch of graded trenches with a deep hole in the middle that went all the way down to sand.
